A few things to look for when buying a used matiz make sure you check the aerial for leakages due to this being a big fault on this car this can cause fuses to blow from water onto the interior light.

Also check the central locking that all doors work since the rear door can evetually become very lazy causing them not to lock there cheap to replace but you dont want to buy a car like it.

And finally airbag check make sure the airbag is functional and light goes out i know it sounds standard but some do miss this this is mainly for matiz vehicles from 98-01 as there was several air bag faults in some vehicles.

also check for water in the oil and vise versa
and also check the intake manifold as they often crack if the head gasket has already gone or on the way out

Normaly the intake manifolds warp due to the heat as they are only plastic. :s

iv heard of them crack aswell on the right hand cilinder intake
im only saying what iv seen so it prob does both after all like you say they are only plastic
