Hello All

The starter motor is on its last legs on my Espero 1.8 1996
Could you (a) tell me how i go about removing it without cutting my hands to pieces and is it best to work from beneath the car?
(b)I'd also like to have a replacement on hand...would anyone be able to tell me the part number and can i pick one up at a Vauxhall breakers

Thanks in advance

Just some advice I had my starter motor replaced sometime last year (the bearings went in it) I luckerly have a very good friend who is a mechainic. He had never done an espero before (lucky him) I purchased an exchange unit £120 (ouch) & gave him the Job of replacing it. Luckerly I stayed and watched him do it.

Replace it from the TOP of the engine not underneath. But you may have to put the car in the air to get to some of the bolts & I know he had to undo the CAM tensioner to get the belt off. Might as well throw a new belt on as well. Also remove the Air box to make room.

As for a vauxhall alternator being the same as the Daewoo unit your guess is as good as mine.

I will get some pics tomorrow if I remember with some pointers to what you need to take off & post them on here for you.

Haven't touched the car yet but did manage to buy a NEW starter motor for £65 from a parts wholesale warehouse in Norfolk. Its due Wednesday.
Vauxhall breakers were asking £40 upwards so didnt think it was worth it with no guarantee.

Was also given this list that others may find useful(numbers on casing)

Yippie Good weather today......

Fist off you will have to remove the Air Box & Pipe.
Undo the Jubilee clips (arrowed) and prise the Pipes off. Dont drop the Jubilee clips. You will never find them LOL

Undo the Nuts arrowed.

Once this is out of the way it will give you room to work with.

Next undo but DONT take off completly the Nuts holding on the Power Steering Pump Bracket.

Next is the Belt tensioner. I think you loosen this to enable you to remove the Belt.

Once the Belt is off completly remove the Nuts holding on the Power steering Bracket. Move this out of the way. BUT BE carefull with the Pipes.

Hopefully this should give you access to the Starter Motor. Its 2 or 3 bolts then holding it on (I think).

Just remember when re-assembling to get your Tensioner correct.

Hope this helps you
