Full Version: New owner - fuel economy and air con

Hello everyone,

I bought my '98 Leganza CDX manual last month. The car drives very well, but I think the fuel economy is even worse than the official figures! I get about 250 miles to a tank. Can anyone suggest a reason why, and whether it is the sort of thing a good service will sort out?

Also, the air con doesn't work. I went to Kwik-Fit for a recharge, and they said that the air con clutch wasn't engaging. Does anyone know of an air con specialist in the south east area who they could recommend?

Many thanks,

Robert.
if there is no gas in system clutch will not engage. the condensors on these cars are prone to leaking but you in to 500+

Thanks for the advice. So maybe it's worth taking it to Kwik-Fit for a re-gas to see if that gets things working? They don't charge if it doesn't improve temperature by over 10%.

You should be getting way more than 250 miles, even if you drive like a loon! There could be numerous causes so I'll list a few of the easier things to check:

1. Tyre pressures. 29psi is the official figure and gives a soft ride, but 34-36psi is better for economy
2. Air filter excessively dirty or blocked
3. Brake(s) binding (check for hot wheels after a drive)
4. Vacuum connection to fuel pressure regulator not connected, leaking or blocked.
5. Split or disconnected vacuum hoses to inlet manifold
6. Fuel leak
7. Engine coolant temperature sensor (check resistance falls as temperature rises)
8. Wrong grade engine oil (too thick - 5W-30 works well)
9. Other engine sensor/actuator fault (see if any fault codes logged)
10. Spark plugs incorrectly gapped, fouled or HT short (plug wells filling up with oil?)

That lot should give you some ideas to go on, though without hearing the engine and driving it, I'm only guessing at causes...
