have a v 99 matiz se, 796cc, petrol, manual gear. just died on me last week.and wouldnt start again, when AA met me(arranged) hours later it started, drove round the corner and it died again. towed home. replaced distrbutor cap, leads, rotor arm tested cables. new coil. plug leads, plugs, tested etc
optical sensor ok. oh yeah before replace and tow would start turn over and die a few minutes later. started yesterday and left engine running didnt die so went for test drive, drove like a dream. after 7 miles i stopped car, after a break of 30 mins or so started it again and fine, drove home whoopee i thought, cured. went to drive to work today engine turning over but doesnt fire. husband at end of tether.
I love my matiz, had it a couple of years, new battery a few months ago. Any ideas?????
Firstly Hello.
Worth a quick check around the immobilser front Check that immobiliser light is off when key in the on position!
Also do a search on here as some matiz suffer from an engine loom problem.

flashing red light goes out as soon as you turn the key and stays out
when trying to start.
immobiliser fine then!
The first thing that strikes me is that the engine appears (from what you say) to run ok when it's up to temp - I wonder if the mixture is not being richened when the engine is cold, hence the hard start? How common is a ECT sensor failure on the Matiz? If the sensor were to go low resistance, the ECM would think the engine was hot, giving a leaner mixture....am I heading in the right direction? It must be worth looking at.
wheareabout in the wiring loom is the problem usually found?
looked at the optical sensor with osciliscope (think thats how you spell it). yeah husband dictating
and its not a true square wave , however the wave shape does not change at all hot or cold, which is why he doesnt think its the optical sensor because if it was that, it would surely be deterioting when the fault occurs. has anybody looked at the optical sensor on a scope before? checked wiring to the ECM from sensor and to the coil all ok
thanks Fogg
unless that sensor switches off the output to the coil hence stopping the spark then I'm not sure that would effect it. Its definitely not fuel problem

Have a look at the manual here:
http://chevy.mrmax.dp.ua/EN/GMDE_TIS_START.html
-what I mean is if the coolant sensor has gone faulty, it may be giving a low resistance value to the ECM, which will make it give a leaner fuel mixture to the injectors (check out the section referring to "Hard Start" under Service Manual/Engine/Control/diagnosis)
have managed to get obd working and got 0110 MAT 0105 MAP 0320 ESCM these i think where genarated by me unpluging and pluging back in to clear any connection probs so lifted emu fuses to clear down faults, replaced and attempted to start then linked obd and got
0320 engine speed circuit malfunction.
any thoughts???
Im thinking of getting a new optical sensor just to try it???
found one for £70 plus pp
what do you guys think ???? is it worth trying? Thankyou
Susie, I would want to do a bit more testing before I parted with 70quids on a chance of being right-it might not be, then you would be 70quids worse off for no gain. I would look at the manual and do some testing as it says under the "Hard Start" section around the voltages and resistances of the sensors that may be suspect. I have to agree with your husband about the no change in Opt. sensor o/p hot and cold. The engine runs fine once it's hot so it has to be something related to the temp of the engine, e.g. incorrect sensor report to the ECM relative to its heat state or something along those lines.
i would replace the complete distributor.
as optical sensor dtc is coming up in past experience having tryed all the things you have done.

neil
have ordered distributor
will let you know
thanks everyone for help so far.
