Tis the only description I can think of really.

I have no engine management lights on, which is sort of reassuring, and sort of not.

Best way to describe it is as though the car is losing power and then picking up revs, especially if driving mid speed (30 -50mph). It's almost as though it wants to back fire and then doesn't.

My local garage stuck it on an emissions tester when it went in for the hand brake (all they had time to do) and told me the emissions were 'all over the place' and that I would need to have it run through an engine management computer to diagnose the problem.

They said it could the Lambda switch, the cat or a GEC(?) switch.

Now I know what a cat is (expensive for one thing) but the other two I'm afraid I have no idea.

I've run some redex through the system to ensure it isn't a blockage in the fuel line, but it hasn't improved it one little bit.

If I'm doing a steady 70 down the motorway, it seems to run fine unless I have to slow down or overtake and then it just loses power again. In fact, If I drive like an old lady and don't really rev the engine at all, then it's fine, but I wouldn't trust it to nip out on a busy junction at the moment.

Before I start spending my hard-earned, has anyone had similar problems and can anyone recommend a good mobile guy with an engine management computer in either Stoke or Telford?
Do you mean the engine revs are going up but the car is'nt going faster, like if the clutch was slipping on a manual car ?

No, more like it loses power randomly whilst driving along, and sort of stutters as though it has fuel starvation.

Given the dodgy emissions readout, I really don't think it's the gearbox that's going.
Sorry thats a tough one,and i'v never heard of a gec switch either.
I think that refers to an intermittent EGR valve operation which can cause this sort of thing - referred to as "chuggling" - whether it is this condition I'm not sure - it could also be a duff O2 sensor - needs codes reading to be sure
Hi Fogg, you'd expect it to smoke a bit if it was an egr fault though.
It might be worth checking all the sensor connectors are ok - the book says as previously mentioned (EGR + O2), if this happened suddenly then it could be a connector or wire fail maybe? Although some DTCs light the MIL, not all do...? Still worth a code read.
Could be a number of things,
1,Blocked exhaust, ive just had one in the workshop doing simlar things and it was the cat converter blocking up.No eml on.
2,The timing belt could of jumped a tooth, seem to run ok but lacks power.
3,02 sensor fault.eml light will only come on ifs its out of range,to high or low,but if its just about in range then youll get no eml on but the car will run really rough.
Still,
I find it hard that the check engine light is not coming on and a code or two not set? Ya, I had a 58X drop a tooth on another car and it had the same symptoms (sorta) but it brought the crank code up.

I know it's a while since I posted about my stuttering/fuel starvation problem but I thought I'd update this thread for others information.

My problem stemmed from an air filter hose that had only been pushed on without the jubilee clip being tightened. So every time I accelerated or braked then hose was moving and either causing the engine to flood or starve depending on what the sensors detected from the air flow. At steady speeds, there was no movement of the engine and therefore no problem.

So it was as simple as a garage being lazy. It was found by an AA engineer within seconds of opening the bonnet.

I never did get it run through diagnostics kit as someone pointed out that if the EMS hadn't recorded a fault, the diagnostics kit wouldn't pick it up either.
Glad you got it sorted & top marks for the AA engineer they have suddenly started looking at cars again rather than just saying need to get that back to the dealer.
Maybe AA has had new targets brought in for there GUYS on the RoadThumbsup
