first of all hello to everyone, i'm looking for some advice regarding changing the ignition barrel on a 1998 espero, i have lost my only key for this car for me to get it up and runnung again is it just a matter of going to a breakers yard & changing the barrel & ecu unit or is there more to it than that..
A big HELLO to you.
You will need barrel, key & immobiliser unit all from the same car and door lock barrel to gain accessThumbsup

ECU would not be needed dont tinkThumbsup

hi, me again
i'm just waiting on key, barrel & immobiliser box arriving from the breakers yard, but today i called my local chevvy/daewoo dealer & according to him the key would still need to be coded to match the car, if this is the case then i would be cheaper getting a new barrel & key from the dealer, do you know if this is the case or is the dealer wrong. Any further help or advice would be hugely appreciated as i am trying to avoid this costing an absolute fortune.

ta much

if it's any help it's a 1998 cdi auto & it has the white immobiliser unit just under the ignition
general comments on the forum say £100+ for a key!
all you need is a second hand barrel and key,the key can then be programed into you existing immobiliser unit.
So yes the dealer is right the key gets coded to the immobiliser unit and syncs with the engine ecu.

so if i replace the barrel key & immobiliser unit will i still need to sync the immobiliser to the ecu, or would it work if i just changed the lot (key/barrel, immobiliser & ecu)..

cheers for your help
Yes if you change everything then it should start, surely thats gonna work out more expensive though isnt it?.

i'm hopefully getting delivered tomorrow the ecu, barrel & key, immobiliser unit & a rear 1/4 window which i broke to get in for £120, the dealer wanted £260 just to replace the barrel & key. moral of the story ALWAYS keep a spare Alright
Hi

All you need is barrel and key although I would suggest a lock set if you have no key at all. Also if you look on the back of the boot lock, if you are lucky you will find the original 4 digit key number that the main dealer can cut from which is your cheapest option...

good luck
just a quick update, i changed the barrel/key & the immobiliser unit & away she goesAnpony, a BIG thankyou for all your help with this pain in the a*** of a problem...Thumbsup
did you need to do ECU aswell?
no, started up with the original ecu so no need to change itThumbsup
