I recently had a similar experience a few miles away from home. The engine and electrics all cut out. I re-charged the battery and managed to drive it back, but the battery light, ABS and break lights stayed on. The battery (~1 yr old) was drained by the time I got home, so something must be draining it. I am a bit worried about driving it anywhere...Thinking about getting rid of it now.
Ayway, did you solve your problem?
Simonm check voltage from alternator if you cant go to halfrauds or similar to check it for ya
Dont forget to visit the

I attached a voltmeter to the battery when idle; it read 12V. Reving the engine it stayed at 12V, so it does seem like the alternator. If that all it turns out to be then I think it will be worth fixing.
Thanks
SM.
As a follow up question. Would I need to get a Daewoo specific alternator or will a compatible one do? If the latter, any recommendations?
Thanks in advance.

any aftermarket alternator would be ok. voltage readings shoul be between 12.9 and 13.9 volts when running
yep dead alternator but i will say this due to the location of the alternator (behind cylinder head left hand side tucked slightly under the brake servo) it is a pig to replace when i had an espero 1.8 it took me two hrs to replace and thats with the daewoo tools. also new alternator are available on ebay for around £70. or any good motor factor for around £100.
I soldered a new delco rectifier into my alternator for £25, it's them that get cooked. The rest is usually ok. Fairly easy to do if you can solder (which isn't hard. You'll need some thermal transfer paste too. I got some free from where I bought the rectifier luckily, but you can buy it. You only need a bit.

Oh, the engine cutting out thing can be the crank sensor. My espero kept cutting out, stalling, not starting, sounding like it was running on two cylinders etc. It was just a loose connection on the crank sensor which is on or near the distributer I think.

This is my problem, when I'm driving, the engine would just suddenly die down. This usually happens when I stopped due to have to abide traffic rules (stopping when traffic light is red). I've already replaced my fuel pump, fuel filter, battery, spark plugs and the distributor - but still it's the same, it would just die down still everytime I'd slow down or stopped. What's worse is that, when I start it back up, it would take more than 10minutes for it to start (yep, you're right, I'm causing heavy traffic). The engine would attempt to start but it doesn't really start (sorry, I dont know the term for that).
do any of you guys happen to have an idea about this problem that I'm currently having with my espero?
Thank you in advance, and I'll be doing any advice you guys can give me.
