Hi first post but I'm stuck.
I've started to replace my drivers side CV joint, I've got all the bits off the car and need to re-assemble it now, unfortunately I can't for the life of me get the new CV joint on over the circlip is there a specific way to do it?
I'd really appreciate any advice.
Owen.
I am not 100% familiar with what you are talking about as it is nearly 33 years since I last changed a CV joint on a mini but what happens if you take the circlip off? Does the CV joint fit then? And once the CV joint is in place can you replace the circlip to hold the CV joint in place?
Yeah, it does fit without the circlip there, but not sure how I can get the clip on once I've got the joint onto the shaft.
I've looked at the manuals but it's still not clear, really was hoping someone might have a magic trick to make it easy really.
The image is here but it's still tricky for my ham fistedness

Have done a couple of CV replacements on the Matiz. Put the nut on the CV outer shaft and line up the joint with drive shaft (preferably with the drive shaft held in a vice or work bench clamp). Hold the joint and give the nut end some sharp taps with a hammer and it will slide on. It's almost impossible to open the circlip and slide it on as you are working in opposite directions; i.e. pushing against the circlip and trying to slide in the opposite direction. The drive shaft splines taper at the end and it is unlikely to cause damage. The nut will protect the threads of the outer shaft and prevent damage.
you have to free the steering knuckle from the Control Arm Assembly, loosen the Drive Axle–to–Hub Caulking Nut, pull the knuckle outwards leaving the CV joint connected to the Drive Axle.
remove the rubber boot covering the CV joint, now you have to have a special tool called "circlips pliers". it looks like this:
costs about £7.00 and quite handy too in gearbox works and comes in all sort of shapes and sizes.
this is how it works:
ware safety goggles when you use one of those.
when you managed to get your CV joint off the drive axle, just replace it with a new one, place a new circlip and use a lot of good grade of lithium grease around the ball bearing, place a new rubber boot and put everything in the opposite sequence and you should be good to go.
i have to warn you though; this is a very dirty job and not advised to one with bad back.
good luck....
