Thanks

Hi Brodie,
The PDF didn't arrive so today I started the slow task of suss-ing out for myself. Managed to do it in about 2 hours. I'll post my method on here for any future unfortunates who have to do the job. My first tip is that you need the hands of a 10 year old !!!!

should be with you in a minute.

let me know you recieved it.
My Y2K matiz starter, is turning but not engaging.
I'm just 'sussing out' the job .... what was the method in the end?
have you got the main wire on the back of the starter
and yes it is a pain in the backside job
just refit my box today
Got a 2nd hand motor off ebay.
Disconnect and remove battery.
(1. for safety)
(2. To get access to top bolt of the started motor)
Put car onto axle stands (with extra supports in case of a stand failure...can't be too careful)

You can then remove the motor mounting bolts.
It is quite heavy..so support it.
I found my motor was only being held in by one bolt. The top one was missing!
This allows you to turn the motor enough to get to the rear connections. I undid a nearby cable clamp to give a bit more movement too.
When putting in the new motor in take care with the electrical connections as they are very close to the other metal parts.
The top bolt seemed to be best accessed by using a 1/4 inch drive rachet with a 35mm extension bar. ( a longer one just didn't seem to pass by a flange)

The whole job was just awkward rather than difficult.

Also......
Took the old motor apart and found the thrust bearing had seized with old grease. Took about an hour with wd40 and engine cleaner, but I eventually freed it. Greased it back up and now have a spare motor....Result
