Full Version: Rear window washer connector leaking behind dash - Cure

My car's a Mk1 I'm not sure if this applies to any other Mk but I'd imagine the Mk2 is the same.
From the start i'm going to apologise for the quality of the pics, they're taken with the wife's phone and I had to use a lamp for light.
It's the best I could do. Also they're only showing thumbnails in my post so click them to get full size.

Time: about 30 minutes start to finish
Tools: medium Philips screwdriver
10mm socket, long extension and ratchet
at least 1 pair of long nose pliers
possibly a lamp depending on your eyesight

Right then to start:
First slide the passenger seat back as far as it'll go.

Next you have to get the glovebox out of the way.
This is real easy; Keep the glovebox closed for now. Remove the 4 screws (2 on each hinge) under the dash or take out the plastic hinge pins. I went with the screws.
Open the glovebox and let it come down to the stops. Now squeeze one side of the glovebox in and pull it out past the stop. With a little wiggling the whole thing can come out and be put to one side (back seat in my case).

Now with the glovebox out of the way you can see the heater motor, it's going to be shifted in a minute.

Next remove the two screws on the side of the dash. The heads face the door (Sorry no pic yet, they keep coming out blurry).

[attachment=1470]Next bit is to take off the part with the blue square around it. Push it towards the centre of the car and ease it off the blower motor.

Be careful here as there's a seal on the end closest to the centre of the car
This allows access to one of the blower mounts. Again I couldn't get a decent pic of it - Sorry.

There are 2 more mounts under the blower motor. Here's a pic of them taken from the footwell
[attachment=1471] They've blue squares around them (in the pic Very Happy)

When you have the blower mounts off, pull the blower towards you (off the mounts) then down and towards you. I don't know if there is a seal here or not but I could hear a seal being seperated on my one so go slowly and you should be fine.

In my case I had to pull the bottom of the dash out a bit before the blower would go down past it (hence removal of the two screws on the side of the dash)

Once the blower is out of the way (dangling below the dash) You should see something like this when you look up towards the top of the wheel arch: [attachment=1472]

The bit with the blue square around it is the connector that came loose. From what I understand that's the usaul culprit for this problem.
Get your hand up behind the black metal plate and you should easily manage to work the pipe around the wiring loom.

Reconnect the connector to the pipe coming from the A post (marked in blue) and you should now have this:[attachment=1473]
Before reassembling your car get an assistant for 2 minutes. Have them operate the rear window washer while you check for any leaks.
Also you may want to add spring clips / jubilee clips to the connection before hiding everything away again. The pipes on mine were real short so I added 2 old fuel pipe spring clips I had lying around. (didn't see the need for a pic here)

Reassembly is simply the reverse of removal, but be careful when you're puting everything back together.
The last thing you want to do is wreck a seal.
After mounting the blower and the square rubber pipe check the blower is sealed properly, I turned mine on full belt and felt around the seals to see it had sealed properly.

Hope this is helpful for some as I didn't find much on the subject and anything I did find said I had to take the dash off.

Alright then, Cue the criticism Very Happy Smile

Regards,
Jim

excellent DIY - myself always wondered where this thing passes from. now I know

thanks Jim....
No problem.

Anytime I do a job on my goldfish I'll post up what I did if I can't find any info on it.

The photo's may not be the best but they'll give the idea.
