Tacuma 2.0 cdx Auto. 27,000 miles 3.5 years old. Whine from transmission. Heard at around 40mph and changing in pitch as car slows down. Took it to gearbox specialist who said it could be pump or torque converter. (Quoted £500 to strip gearbox and have a look) I was not convinced so took it to another expert autogearbox man who insisted on driving the car for himself, listened intently (even slipped into neutral at 40mph and switched engine off). Since there was no difference in noise (ie related to speed of roadwheels) he was convinced that the problem was in the differential, specifically crown wheel and pinion. He has since stripped the gearbox confirmed that the crownwheel and pinion are severely pitted and that the bearings in the diff. are about to break up. Estimate between £1200 and £1500.
I am told by the real expert that this gearbox was made by ZF especially for Daewoo. He has also learnt that the problem is quite common. The bearings are not standard sizes and are becoming difficult to get hold of. However he reckons he could re-engineer the gearbox to take standard bearings. I still luv my Daewoo and will have the repair done.

ABS LAMP ON ALL THE TIME:
Just thought I would share with you what I have found, after checking the resistance’s on my Tacuma’s abs sensors and finding the front wheel sensor to be open circuit, I placed a 1000 ohm resistor across the plug’s terminals and tested the ABS light.
Hooray the light went out, this proved that the sensor was faulty; all that’s left now to do is get hold of a new sensor and I know it will work.

Hope this helps somebody else with the same problem.

need a water pump spanner for Tacuma 1.6? DIY.
Halfords has a blue spanner for water pipes, this type with a nut opening or closing the width of the tool, poor quality. Cut the to long handle off with a hack saw. Put it from the inside of the plastic housing on the top of the pump. Use a piece of hollow section for pressing on the end from the top of the engine, that gives you enough torque for turning the pump. Needs to try a few times till tension is right (very poor designThumbsdown). Spanner costs 8.50 GBP.

Never try to repair a Tacuma with timing belt problem. Throw the car away.Axed You will sleep better.
